Prom Dresses Care: Dry Cleaning and Fabric Types

Linda Dresses

Proper Cleaning for Different Types of Fabrics

Dry cleaning your prom dress / wedding gown will extend its lifetime, help keep its color, fabric strength, shape and drape. It will help maintain that “store bought” appearance longer, allowing your purchase to become a long-lasting investment.

Natural Fabrics

    * Cotton

Washable.Creases when washed, wrinkled when worn, requires ironing. Can be destroyed by contact with acids, even mild ones like fruit juice. You can usually use a chlorine bleach (check the garment care label first).

    * Linen

Washable.Ideal to Dry Clean. Does not soil quickly. Good quality linens can be safely washed on a normal wash cycle (make sure the garment does not contain other unwashable fibers). Some linens shrink and should be dry-cleaned.

    * Silk

Ideal to Dry Clean. Some silk garments can be gently washed in a neutral detergent, such as the special wool washes.

    * Wool

Washable. Ideal to Dry Clean. Wool is damaged by alkalis, the cleaning agents in wash powders and bar soaps. Special non-alkaline wool washing products should be used. Wool garments are best laid flat to dry away from direct heat.

Processed Natural Fibers

    * Acetate and Triacetate

Washable. Both heat sensitive. Triacetate can withstand higher ironing temperatures. Do not twist or wring while wet. These fabrics are damaged by acetone – for example, nail polish remover.

    * Viscose (Rayon)

Washable. Handle gently. Becomes weak when wet. Use a gentle wash cycle. Can shrink and distort. Do not hang dry. Iron while damp.

Synthetic Fabrics

    * Acrylic

Washable. Must wash below 50°C. Wash gently by hand or gentle machine cycle. Do not tumble dry. Do not steam iron. Dry clean tough stains.

    * Nylon

Washable. Has a tendency to absorb colour and dirt from other items during washing. Wash separately if possible. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use chlorine bleach. Dry clean tough stains.

    * Polyester

Washable. Can be washed warm (make sure the garment does not contain other fibers that cannot be washed warm). Dry clean tough stains.
Spandex/Elastane (Trade Name Lycra)
Washable. Wash in low/warm temperatures. Do not tumble dry. Dry clean tough stains.

Note: All synthetic fabrics are sensitive to heat and will get a glazed surface and shrink if heated too much during ironing.

All About Cocktail dress

Linda Dresses

A cocktail dress or cocktail gown is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties, and semi-formal occasions.

The length of cocktail dresses varies depending on fashion and local custom. The length ranges from just above the knee to touching the ankle. When it is about 5 cm (2 inches) above the ankle it is called tea length and when it is almost touching the ankle it is called ballerina length, although ballerina length dresses usually fall into the evening gown category.

At semi-formal occasions, less elaborate, shorter-length cocktail dresses may be worn, when gentlemen are in dark suits. Prior to the mid 20th century this type of dress was known as 'late afternoon'. When gentlemen are in business suits, ladies also wear dress suits or "good" afternoon skirt and dresses.

By the 1980s a dress was considered to be cocktail less by where the hem fell, but more by the level of sumptuousness the garment attained.

In the mid-20th century, some couturiers began describing full-skirted cocktail gowns as "dancing costumes". These are suitable for formal dances but not for balls, or other white tie affairs, where ball gowns are worn.

So a great choice is provided for the bride who has always puzzling in choosing the cheap bridesmaid dress when she has many maids of honor and cannot decide what color should be the most suitable for all of them.

Green is a gorgeous hue for weddings. How about a shade like moss green, grass green, or yellow-green, all lighter and less wintry than forest green? And do not think your designer bridesmaid dresses in different colors is too radical — in fact, it’s completely cool! You could put them in all different shades of green, which would be gorgeous and would make you really happy. If you want to do all different colors, just make sure you choose hues in the same tone, whether it’s muted, jewel, or pastel. A rainbow of bridesmaid shades is amazing — and if the variety suits you, that’s all the more reason to do it.
